Leh, August 31, 2026:- A significant initiative was launched on Monday to make the public transportation system in Ladakh safer, more modern, and environmentally friendly. Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor, Vinai Kumar Saxena, laid the foundation stone for 30 smart bus shelters. Of these, 15 shelters will be developed in Leh and 15 in Kargil. The project has been designed with the region’s harsh climate in mind, aiming to spare passengers the hardship of waiting for buses in the open during winter.
The proposed smart bus shelters place special emphasis on safety and technology alongside passenger convenience. A passenger information system will be installed to provide GPS-based bus tracking, real-time bus updates, and GPS-calculated arrival times. Passengers will receive information regarding bus status and estimated arrival times via digital displays. Additionally, facilities such as CCTV surveillance, SOS/emergency features, first aid, and other safety measures will be provided.
A safe, covered waiting area will be provided for passengers to shield them from the extreme cold, strong winds, and snowfall of winter. The project also caters to the needs of passengers with disabilities and special needs; provisions include tactile facilities for the visually impaired and an accessible layout.
Each shelter will be equipped with a solar power system, battery storage, and a hybrid inverter. This will help supply power to passenger information systems, Wi-Fi, and other essential amenities, while reducing reliance on conventional grid electricity. Beyond promoting the use of clean energy in Ladakh, this initiative will contribute to the goal of achieving a carbon-neutral Ladakh.
it also aims to integrate them with the region’s local culture. Their design will reflect Ladakhi architecture and local heritage, thereby blending modern public transport facilities with the area’s traditional architectural style and cultural identity.
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena described this initiative not merely as the construction of bus stops, but as a step towards developing a safe, comfortable, and sustainable public transport system. He noted that this system—designed with Ladakh’s challenging climate and local context in mind—would improve the fulfillment of people’s daily needs and encourage the use of public transport.
He emphasized advancing clean energy-based infrastructure in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a carbon-neutral Ladakh. He also appealed to the public to cooperate with the administration in keeping these public facilities clean and well-maintained.
In the future, these 30 smart bus shelters in Leh and Kargil could serve as a prime example of how technology, safety, environmental conservation, and local culture can be harmoniously integrated into Ladakh’s public transport system.
